My Wife Had an Affair Years Ago. I Just Found Out She's Talking to Him Again, and Now I Want a Divorce.

What a horrible night.

Four years ago, my wife had an affair with one of her coworkers.

At the time, we'd been married for three years and were struggling with infertility. It was devastating for both of us, and that's when she cheated.

I only found out because another coworker contacted me and told me what was happening.

We came incredibly close to divorcing.

Instead, we went through marriage counseling, and over time things genuinely seemed to improve. For the past couple of years, our marriage had honestly felt solid again.

We had a weekly date night that I planned. I brought her flowers almost every week, wrote little love notes, and did everything I could think of to show her how much I loved her.

I truly didn't want to lose her.

As part of rebuilding our marriage, she quit that job and promised she had completely cut off contact with the man she had the affair with.

At least...

That's what I believed.

Yesterday we were at the gym.

While she was in the shower, I realized I'd left my phone at home.

To pass the time, I picked up hers and started scrolling through Instagram.

I wasn't trying to snoop.

Honestly, I hadn't felt the need to check her phone in well over two years.

Then I noticed a message notification.

Curiosity got the better of me.

I opened it.

It was him.

The coworker she had the affair with.

He had messaged her about two months earlier asking how she'd been.

I read through the conversation.

There was nothing romantic.

Nothing sexual.

Nothing obviously inappropriate.

They were simply catching up about work, life, and former coworkers.

If it had been literally anyone else...

I wouldn't have cared.

But it wasn't.

It was the one person who almost destroyed our marriage.

While sitting in the car afterward, I couldn't stop thinking about everything we'd worked so hard to rebuild over the past four years. During counseling, one of the biggest commitments we both agreed to was complete transparency regarding any future contact with the person involved in the affair. After everything happened yesterday, I spoke briefly with a family friend who had gone through a similar divorce. They encouraged me to think carefully about my next steps, especially because we now have a young child together, and suggested that before making any major legal decisions I should understand how custody, parenting arrangements, and the divorce process generally work in our state by speaking with a qualified family law attorney. That conversation reminded me that this situation wasn't only about our marriage anymore—it was also about making thoughtful decisions for our son's future.

I quietly took screenshots of the conversation and sent them to myself.

Then I waited until we were back in the car.

I asked her one simple question.

"Why are you talking to him?"

Instead of answering...

She immediately became angry.

She started yelling that I had no right to read her private messages.

She said I obviously didn't trust her.

I admitted that I shouldn't have looked through her phone.

Then I told her...

I wanted a divorce.

She immediately went silent.

When we got home, she packed a bag and left.

She didn't answer a single phone call or text message for the rest of the night.

After sleeping on everything...

I still feel exactly the same.

I honestly don't think they're having another affair.

That's not even what hurts the most.

What hurts is that she secretly reopened communication with the one person she had promised would never be part of our lives again.

She made that decision without telling me.

To me...

That betrayal feels almost as painful as the original affair.

Am I overreacting?

Update

She finally texted me.

She said she spent the night in a hotel.

She also asked me to stay with my parents for a while.

I forgot to mention earlier that we have a one-year-old son, so I'll need help taking care of him while we try to figure everything out.

She also said she understands why I want a divorce.

She isn't going to fight me on it.

In fact...

She's already looking for divorce lawyers.

I honestly don't even know what I'm feeling anymore.

I still believe divorce is probably the right decision.

But I think a small part of me hoped she'd fight for us.

That she'd ask for counseling again.

That she'd tell me she made a terrible mistake.

Something.

Instead...

She accepted it almost immediately.

Part of me can't stop wondering whether she'll eventually end up dating that former coworker again.

At this point, though...

The only thing I truly care about is our son.

No matter what happens between his parents, I hope we can both be the kind of mother and father he deserves.

Thank you to everyone who's reached out with support.

If anything significant happens...

I'll post another update.
