UPDATE: I Got a Girl Pregnant That I Barely Know and She Wants to Keep the Baby

Sorry it’s been a bit, but I’ve had a lot going on over the past couple of days, obviously. I finally told my parents, and while they were definitely shocked and disappointed, they also agreed that we don’t even know for sure whether the baby is mine. This also isn’t their first experience dealing with an unexpected pregnancy in the family—my brother got his high school sweetheart pregnant years ago, so I guess we’re doing a fantastic job of keeping them on their toes.

Thankfully, my parents already had a family lawyer they’d worked with before, so we were able to schedule a phone consultation. He helped me draft a message explaining that I wouldn’t be discussing anything further until a legally recognized DNA paternity test could be completed. We learned that there are non-invasive prenatal DNA tests that can be performed during pregnancy, although they’re pretty expensive. My parents offered to help cover the cost, but I decided I should take responsibility and pay for it myself.

During the consultation, the attorney also explained the importance of documenting every conversation and avoiding making any statements that could later be interpreted as accepting legal responsibility before the paternity results are confirmed. He recommended keeping all communication in writing whenever possible until everything is verified through the proper medical process. Hearing that made me realize how serious the legal side of this situation could become, and it reinforced that waiting for official medical evidence is the smartest decision for everyone involved.

I texted her exactly what we had discussed and didn’t respond to anything else she sent afterward. She immediately went on a long rant, insisting I was the only person she had slept with in months, saying this was fate, that we were meant to be together, and that everything would work out. After several hours of silence, she finally agreed to take the DNA test.

My parents’ lawyer referred us to a physician who performs non-invasive prenatal paternity testing, and we managed to schedule the appointment for next Tuesday. I’ll be driving up to South Carolina just for the medical appointment and heading back home afterward. I really don’t want to miss classes, but because of the holiday weekend there weren’t many clinics with appointments available.

The stress from all of this has honestly been overwhelming. Between worrying about school, the financial cost of the testing, and the uncertainty surrounding everything, I’ve barely been sleeping. My primary care doctor even suggested that if the anxiety continues after the results come back, it might be worth speaking with a licensed mental health professional just to help process everything. I never expected to find myself dealing with legal consultations, specialized medical testing, and conversations about my future all within the same week.

She still keeps texting me and trying to FaceTime me. Outside of confirming the appointment details, I haven’t replied to anything. She keeps trying to plan for me to meet her parents, go out to dinner, and talk about our future together, but that’s simply not what this trip is about. She even added me to a shared Pinterest board full of baby ideas and asked what names I liked. Honestly, I just can’t emotionally deal with any of that right now.

I also scheduled an appointment with my own doctor to discuss getting a vasectomy. This whole experience scared the hell out of me, and I’d honestly rather make sure I never find myself in a situation like this again.

Edit: We did use condoms, for everyone asking. Also, getting a vasectomy is my personal decision. I understand that it can be permanent—that’s exactly why I’m considering it. That’s my choice to make. And yes, it was a European cruise. The drinking age is 18 in many of the countries we visited, and we stopped at multiple ports where passengers could leave the ship, so yes, leaving early was possible.

Any future updates will probably just be posted on my profile, but I’ll definitely share the DNA test results here once I have them.
