For some background, my ex-wife (33F) and I (33M) divorced when we were both 24, about nine years ago. Since then, she has remarried and has been with her current husband for nearly six years.
Recently, one of our daughters (11F) became interested in learning guitar. Since I own several guitars, I decided to give her one of mine so she could practice while she was staying at her mom's house.
This wasn't just any guitar.
It had an incredible amount of sentimental value to me.
I've played it at close friends' weddings, at the funeral of someone I loved dearly, and during countless important moments throughout my life. One of my favorite memories is sitting beside my daughter when she was a baby and quietly playing lullabies on that very guitar until she fell asleep.
Because of everything attached to it, it felt incredibly meaningful to pass it down to her now that she was discovering her own interest in music.
I honestly hoped she would eventually create her own memories with it just like I had.
Then today...
Everything changed.
After exchanging a few text messages with my ex-wife, I called her.
That's when she casually told me she had sold the guitar for $350.
She then used $150 of that money to buy my daughter a different guitar.
The remaining $200 was gone.
My first reaction was honestly disbelief.
It felt like she had simply seen an opportunity to make some extra money.
She's always been extremely focused on finances, so I couldn't stop wondering whether that was exactly what had happened.
After the conversation, I even spoke with a friend who works in family law because I genuinely wasn't sure whether I was overreacting. He explained that while custody arrangements and property laws vary depending on where people live, items that are clearly gifted to a child can create difficult legal and ethical questions if one parent decides to sell them without discussing it first—especially when the other parent originally purchased or owned the item. He wasn't giving me legal advice, but hearing that made me realize this wasn't just about the guitar's monetary value. It was about respecting our daughter's belongings and communicating before making a decision that couldn't be undone.
When I confronted my ex-wife, she suddenly broke down crying.
She called me an insensitive a**hole.
She explained that she couldn't stand seeing the guitar sitting in her house because it brought back too many memories from our marriage and that looking at it had become emotionally overwhelming.
I honestly don't want to dismiss her feelings.
If the guitar genuinely caused her pain, I can understand that.
But what I don't understand is why she never talked to me first.
Why not call me and say,
"This is difficult for me. Can you come pick it up?"
I would have driven over immediately.
I would have bought my daughter another guitar myself.
Anything would have been better than selling something that meant so much to both me and our daughter.
The hardest part is that my daughter absolutely loved that guitar.
She wasn't embarrassed by it.
She never asked for a different one.
She actually felt proud that I had trusted her enough to pass it down to her.
Now it's gone forever.
And I never even had the chance to say goodbye to it or explain things to my daughter before someone else made that decision for us.
So...
Am I overreacting?
Or was selling the guitar without talking to either me or our daughter completely out of line?
