My Husband Told His Friends He Doesn't Find Me Attractive. I Can't Look at Him the Same Way.

I'm newly married, and ever since our honeymoon something happened that I haven't been able to move past.

After we got home, my husband had a group video call with his closest friends. I joined for a little while, said hello, chatted with everyone, then excused myself to go for a walk.

A few minutes later I realized it looked like it was about to rain, so I went back inside to grab my raincoat.

My husband and his friends thought I'd already left.

As I walked in, I overheard their conversation.

They were joking around about our honeymoon when one of his best friends suddenly asked him if my looks were still an issue for him.

He replied that he loved me, that we'd had an amazing honeymoon, and that I was "beautiful on the inside."

Then he laughed and added,

"You can't have it all."

His friend kept pushing, asking whether he felt like he'd "downgraded" from his ex-girlfriend.

He answered,

"Maybe... but she makes me happy."

Then another friend chimed in and said I wasn't bad-looking if I lost some weight.

My husband agreed.

I never let them know I had heard any of it.

It's been five weeks since then, and nothing feels the same.

I've never considered myself conventionally beautiful, but I truly believed my husband found me attractive—or at least loved me exactly as I was.

Now I feel like I've discovered that the man I married settled for me physically.

He tells me he loves me.

He's kind to me.

He's affectionate.

But every compliment feels different now because I know what he says when he thinks I'm not listening.

A close friend eventually suggested that I consider talking to a marriage counselor before letting these feelings continue to build. They pointed out that comments made in private—especially hurtful ones—can seriously damage trust and self-esteem, even if the person insists they love their spouse. The more I thought about it, the more I realized this wasn't simply about whether he finds me attractive. It was about whether I could still feel emotionally safe and genuinely valued in my marriage after hearing how he described me to the people closest to him.

Ironically...

I've actually lost weight over these last few weeks.

He's noticed.

He keeps complimenting me on it.

Instead of making me feel better...

Every compliment hurts.

I don't want him talking about my appearance anymore.

His praise doesn't feel genuine.

It feels like confirmation that he really does prefer me thinner and never truly liked the way I looked before.

At the same time...

I hate that a part of me now feels desperate to become more attractive for him.

I constantly compare myself to his ex.

I wonder whether he'll ever honestly look at me and think I'm beautiful.

I'm questioning things I never questioned before.

And that's what hurts the most.

I married someone believing I was enough exactly as I was.

Now I can't stop wondering whether he ever believed that himself.

I'm honestly devastated.

Am I overreacting for feeling like this has completely changed the way I see my marriage?
