AITA for refusing to comply by my ex-wife's husband's rules about what my kids can eat so they can go to their mom's house?

AITA for Refusing to Follow My Ex-Wife's Husband's Food Rules for My Kids?

My ex-wife and I (both in our 30s) divorced seven years ago. We have two sons together, ages 8 and 9. My ex-wife remarried two years ago, and her husband brought his son and daughter into the marriage.

About five months after they got married, my ex-wife's husband sent me a list of foods that he said I was no longer allowed to feed my boys because his daughter has severe allergies. According to him, whenever my sons stayed at their house after spending time with me, his daughter would struggle with her allergies. He said my boys had told him they regularly ate those foods while they were with me.

He insisted that everyone entering their home had to avoid those foods and demanded that I remove them from my children's diet during my parenting time, which was every other week.

The foods included:

  • Peanut Butter

  • Eggs

  • Cheese

  • Strawberries

  • Chocolate

At first, I honestly thought it was a joke.

But after my kids went back to their mom's house, I received an email from him criticizing me for refusing to follow his instructions.

Not long afterward, my ex-wife actually took me to court, asking either for full custody or for our custody agreement to include a rule preventing our sons from eating those foods while they were with me.

She lost on both requests.

The judge made it clear that they could not dictate what I was allowed to feed my own children during my parenting time.

For the past year, my ex-wife has refused to exercise her parenting time.

According to her husband, my sons are not welcome in their home if they have eaten any of the foods on his list. He claims his daughter could suffer a life-threatening allergic reaction and believes she should never be placed in a situation that makes her uncomfortable because, in his words, "a grown man with a petty grudge refuses to help keep a child safe."

My ex-wife blames me entirely for the situation.

She says that if I simply followed the list, she could continue being an active mother to our children. She has even told me that several members of her own family have agreed to follow the same restrictions, while others have refused.

My boys miss their mom, but they don't miss being at her house.

I've repeatedly offered to help arrange visits somewhere else so they can spend time together, but my ex-wife refuses. She won't come to my home, and she won't meet anywhere outside her own house. She insists that if the boys won't follow the household food rules, they are not welcome there during her parenting time.

I'm not willing to remove perfectly normal foods from my children's diet simply because someone else demands it.

Because of all this, my boys have remained with me.

My ex-wife has not taken that well.

She accuses me of being selfish, says I'm intentionally alienating our sons from her, and insists that all I have to do is obey the household rules so the boys can have both parents in their lives.

I genuinely wanted outside opinions because the people supporting me are mostly friends and family who already know me.

AITA?

Family law, parenting responsibilities, and child health concerns can create difficult situations after divorce, especially when multiple households have different expectations. While medical safety is important, custody agreements and parental decision-making often require clear legal boundaries and reasonable cooperation from everyone involved.
