AITA for Believing My Son Before There's Proof He's the Father?

Our son recently turned 16. Until about a month ago, he had a girlfriend who is also 16, almost 17.

About three weeks ago, her parents contacted us and told us she was pregnant. By that point, she was already beginning to show, and based on the timeline, it seemed possible that my son could be the father.

My wife and I immediately went into panic mode.

We waited a couple of days before telling our son because we wanted to think through the situation first.

The moment we told him, he immediately responded,

"It's not mine. We never had intercourse."

At first, I didn't believe him because I knew he was sexually active. In fact, he had previously come to me asking for protection, and I had always encouraged him to be responsible.

He continued insisting that they had never actually had intercourse.

Instead, he admitted that he had been unfaithful during the relationship.

We had a long conversation together.

While I was disappointed by some of the choices he admitted making, I gradually started believing that he genuinely thought the baby wasn't his.

He explained that whenever he was intimate with someone, he always used protection and had regularly asked me to buy more.

My wife, however, remained convinced he was lying.

Eventually, both families met to discuss the situation.

My wife began the conversation by assuming our son was the father and immediately started discussing finances, responsibilities, and what the future might look like.

Our son interrupted and firmly repeated that he was not the father because he and his ex-girlfriend had never had intercourse.

He was visibly angry.

He then explained that the most intimate thing they had ever done together was an act that could not result in pregnancy, and he admitted he had never wanted to take the relationship any further.

Needless to say, we were extremely unhappy with several things he admitted during that conversation, and we made that very clear afterward.

His ex-girlfriend described an occasion that she believed resulted in the pregnancy, including when and where it supposedly happened.

Her explanation sounded believable.

At the same time, I also know my son well.

He's made poor decisions before and isn't always truthful, but despite that, I honestly believe he believes what he's telling us.

My wife strongly disagrees.

She says I'm simply accepting his version of events because I'm making excuses for him.

She also pointed out that we became parents ourselves when we were both 17 and believes I'm refusing to face reality instead of helping prepare for what could happen.

Because I don't think we should make life-changing decisions until paternity has been confirmed, I've stepped back from further meetings with the other family for now.

In my opinion, those conversations should wait until we actually know whether my son is the biological father.

At the moment, her parents don't want a paternity test until after the baby is born because they believe testing during pregnancy could be risky, even though I've since learned that some modern testing methods are considered safe.

As things currently stand, we have to wait until after the birth before paternity can officially be confirmed.

For context, we're in the UK.

AITA for believing my son until there's actual proof that he's the father?

Situations involving teenage pregnancy, parental responsibility, paternity testing, and family law can be emotionally challenging for everyone involved. Taking time to confirm the facts, communicate respectfully, and make informed legal and parenting decisions can help families navigate difficult circumstances while protecting the interests of both the child and everyone involved.
