I'm a 20-year-old woman (almost 21), currently in college and working an internship in New York City.
I'm completely financially independent.
After my parents divorced, my mom used the money that had originally been saved for my college, so everything I have now comes from my internship and my part-time job. My dad was abusive, and I no longer have any contact with him.
For the past couple of weeks, both of my supervisors have mostly been out of the office, so I've only needed to go into work during the afternoons. I work in computer science, so remote work is completely normal and expected.
My entire family uses Life360.
Last week, though, the app started malfunctioning.
It kept showing me at work when I wasn't there.
Showing me at home when I wasn't.
Basically displaying the wrong location almost constantly.
Because of that, my mom began texting me every single day asking why the app wasn't working and questioning where I was.
Eventually I got tired of dealing with it.
I deleted the app, planning to reinstall it over the weekend if I had time.
The reaction completely caught me off guard.
Almost immediately, multiple family members started reaching out because they could no longer see my location on Life360.
Here's the thing.
They could still see my location using Find My.
Nothing about my safety had actually changed.
The only real difference was that Life360 had stopped sending automatic notifications every single time I:
Left my apartment.
Arrived at work.
Left work.
Returned home.
Realizing that honestly made me uncomfortable.
It wasn't really about the app anymore.
It made me realize that I didn't actually want my every movement being automatically reported throughout the day.
I even spent some time reading through the privacy settings for both apps and realized there was a significant difference between voluntarily sharing my location when needed and having constant automatic notifications sent every time I arrived somewhere or left. That made me start thinking more seriously about personal boundaries and digital privacy. I'm an adult living on my own, paying my own bills, and making my own decisions. Wanting a little more control over how my location is shared doesn't feel the same to me as hiding something or putting myself in danger.
For some context...
I've never been a rebellious kid.
I pay all of my own bills.
I've never been arrested.
I've never snuck out.
I'm honestly a homebody who spends most of my free time reading.
I graduated at the top of my class.
I earned a full-tuition scholarship.
I landed a competitive internship.
I've never given anyone a reason to think I can't manage my own life responsibly.
My relationship with my mom has always been difficult.
My younger brother is very obviously the favorite.
Whenever I reach out because I need emotional support or simply want someone to talk to, she usually reminds me that I'm an adult and tells me I need to handle things on my own.
Just yesterday I texted her that I'd made it to the final interview round for an incredibly prestigious summer internship.
Her entire response was:
"Keep me posted."
Honestly...
Complete strangers online seemed more excited for me than my own mother.
Then today...
Instead of texting me directly...
She messaged my girlfriend asking,
"I'm worried about her. Did something happen with her job?"
My girlfriend happened to be at work and simply forwarded the message to me.
That eventually led to a long text conversation between my mom and me.
I'll admit something.
Years of frustration came pouring out during that conversation.
I probably said things I'd been holding inside for a very long time.
But I don't feel like I was disrespectful.
More than anything, I tried explaining that I'm an adult, I'm financially independent, and I no longer want every movement I make tracked through an app—especially when my family already has another way to locate me in a genuine emergency.
Right now I'm sitting here crying.
Part of me wonders whether I completely overreacted.
The other part wonders whether I've simply reached a point where I need healthier boundaries with my family.
So...
Was I actually out of line?
