I (40f, no kids) sometimes babysit my 3f cousin. Her mother is one of those gentle parents, which means that with every single temper tantrum the kid gets what they want. There's zero attempts at disciplining the child, everything is solved by either giving the child what she wants or just nursing her to shut her up. Needless to say, to say this child is a menace is an understatement, but I digress.
Anyway, I'm not here to discipline other people's kids, but it makes me so sad. She really is a smart sweet kid with huge potential, and it hurts me to my core to see it go to waste like that, as the kid's behavior gets worse and worse by the day.
This child's mother's gentle parenting style clashes with my views on discipline. Despite that, I try to set boundaries during our time together to limit screen time and encourage good behavior.
I just can't. It's so hard to do it knowing that I'm actively ruining this child, I just can't.
During a babysitting session, I refused to give in to the child's temper tantrum for more TV time, which led to a confrontation with her mother.
AITA for not giving in to the temper tantrum right away?
The mother was upset with me for trying to discipline her child, causing tension during the babysitting session.
🏠 The Aftermath
After the incident, the child's mother took her home earlier than planned, and we haven't discussed the situation since.
The child's behavior has not changed, and I continue to struggle with the dilemma of staying true to my beliefs while respecting the mother's parenting style.
The consequences of the disagreement have strained our relationship, making future babysitting sessions uncertain.
It's challenging to balance my values with the mother's parenting choices.
The conflicting perspectives have left me feeling conflicted and unsure about future interactions with the child and her mother.
