Hi everyone.
A while ago—around Thanksgiving—I posted here asking whether I should call the police because my 17-year-old brother had started experiencing severe delusions and hearing voices. At the time, I was terrified that he might need to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital for his own safety.
So many of you offered thoughtful advice and support, and I'm incredibly grateful for that.
Unfortunately...
Things have gotten much worse.
After everything that happened over Thanksgiving, my dad originally agreed that he would take my brother to the hospital.
Then he changed his mind.
Again.
I tried explaining that I didn't believe this was simply related to my brother's autism. I genuinely felt he was experiencing something far more serious and needed immediate professional help.
Dad dismissed my concerns.
His new theory was that my brother's symptoms were simply side effects from his medication.
The problem with that explanation?
My brother had been hearing voices and experiencing these delusions long before he ever started taking those medications.
Christmas completely changed everything.
My brother barely wanted to participate.
He opened a couple of presents and then disappeared under a pile of blankets, refusing to come back out.
That's when my dad finally said we should take him to the hospital.
My mom argued against it because she didn't want to "ruin Christmas."
They started fighting.
Meanwhile, my sister sat down with my brother and gently talked to him.
She came back looking terrified.
She told us the voices were once again telling him to hurt other people.
This time, the voice even had a name.
She thought it sounded like "Vinnie" or "Vinna."
At that point, we knew we couldn't ignore it any longer.
We tried convincing my brother to come outside with us.
He refused.
Eventually we began guiding him toward the front door.
Everything happened incredibly fast after that.
I honestly don't remember every detail.
At some point my brother shoved me.
I lost my balance and crashed into a dog kennel.
The impact left me bruised from my hip almost all the way down to my knee.
Seeing me fall seemed to frighten him.
That brief moment gave us enough time to help him into the car.
My dad, my sister, and I drove him straight to the hospital.
We spent most of Christmas afternoon there.
Dad once again insisted this was probably just a medication reaction.
This time, though, my sister and I refused to let that explanation end the conversation.
The doctors performed a full medical evaluation.
They ruled out obvious physical causes such as tumors or other biological conditions.
More importantly...
They agreed with us.
My brother clearly needed professional psychiatric help.
One of the physicians also explained that psychiatric illnesses can sometimes appear for the first time during the teenage years or early adulthood, and that symptoms such as hearing voices or experiencing severe delusions deserve assessment by specialists even when initial medical tests don't reveal a physical cause. Hearing that reinforced how important it was for us to keep pushing for appropriate mental health care instead of assuming the symptoms would simply disappear on their own.
Unfortunately...
The doctors didn't believe he met the criteria for involuntary admission to the psychiatric ward.
They were concerned that forcing him into that environment might make him even more frightened.
They also explained that he didn't qualify for an emergency psychiatric evaluation because he'd already been seen by a therapist within the previous six months.
So now...
We're waiting.
And honestly...
I don't know what comes next.
My leg still hurts.
My heart hurts even more.
I still can't believe this is happening.
No matter what's going on...
He's still my little brother.
I would move heaven and earth to help him.
Watching someone you love slowly become someone you barely recognize is one of the most heartbreaking experiences I've ever gone through.
Thank you again to everyone who reached out with kindness, advice, and support.
It truly meant more than you know.
I hope all of you had a peaceful holiday season.
