 My sister secretly took my parents' car while they were out.

She only had a learner's permit, meaning she legally wasn't allowed to drive without a licensed adult in the car.

Instead, she let her boyfriend drive.

He wasn't even old enough to qualify for a learner's permit.

He lost control of the car and crashed.

I overheard my mom saying that even declaring bankruptcy wouldn't erase the lawsuit debt, and their lawyers have warned them they'll probably lose if the case goes to trial, so they're trying to negotiate a settlement instead.

Meanwhile, my sister's medical expenses and long-term nursing home costs are astronomical.
