And I Thought Proposing at Someone Else's Wedding Was Bad

 Final Edit:

Thank you all so much for the kind words about my dad. I completely agree—he really is the best.

I do have one request, though. Please don't send this story to podcasts, YouTube channels, TikTok accounts, or other content creators. I didn't bother disguising anyone's identities, and if any of my relatives heard this story, they'd immediately know who it was about.

My dad would be absolutely mortified.

Also, if anyone has looked through my previous posts, you'll know I've written a lot about my complicated feelings surrounding my mother's death. I'd be devastated if my dad ever read those thoughts. He's already been through enough.

I know Reddit isn't a private place, but I honestly never expected this story to become so popular. The kind of family chaos I'm describing has always seemed normal to me, but reading everyone's reactions has made me realize it definitely isn't.

If it only affected me, I wouldn't care.

But this is about my dad.

Thank you.

My dad—bless him—is shy, incredibly intelligent, and somehow also the biggest gossip I've ever met.

He absolutely hates weddings and large social gatherings, especially since my mum passed away. For forty years she was his social safety net. Only recently has he started attending events on his own again, and I'm genuinely proud of him for doing it.

Today he attended the wedding of an extended family member.

He was dreading every second of it.

I reminded him that this side of the family is famously messy and that there was a good chance something dramatic would happen.

That was enough to convince him to go.

And wow...

He did not disappoint.

I originally planned to post screenshots of our text messages, but I'd have to censor too much of what he said about missing Mum, so here's the conversation instead.

I came out of a meeting to find these messages waiting for me.

Message 1:

"Good afternoon. Are you there? I am in the bathroom. Love you xx"

Message 2:

"Good afternoon. I need to speak to you urgently. Love you xx"

Message 3:

"Good afternoon. Is your phone not working? Love you xx"

(As a side note... why are dads always so formal over text? It's honestly adorable.)

Naturally, I panicked.

I replied:

"WHAT? WHAT'S WRONG? IS IT YOUR HEART?"

Then I immediately called him.

No answer.

A few minutes later...

Message 4:

"Good afternoon. I can't speak right now. I am socialising. At the Event of the Decade and it's not as painful as I thought. However, Uncle J used his Father of the Bride speech to announce he is divorcing Auntie E. News to everyone, including possibly E. Drama! Love you xx"

Yes.

The father of the bride stood up, congratulated the happy couple, wished them a wonderful future...

...and then casually announced that he was divorcing his wife of more than thirty years.

This was apparently news to absolutely everyone.

Including the bride.

Possibly even Auntie E herself.

To be fair, those two have hated each other for years.

But there are probably better ways to announce a divorce.

Dad informed me he was now "socialising," which I interpreted as wandering around collecting gossip.

Apparently proposing at someone else's wedding isn't the worst thing you can do.

Announcing your divorce during your daughter's wedding speech might actually beat it.

During one of Dad's later updates, another relative quietly mentioned that if Uncle J had really been planning the divorce for some time, announcing it publicly like this could make what was already going to be an emotionally difficult legal process even worse. They joked that any future family law attorney would probably have quite a story to hear, especially with dozens of wedding guests now acting as eyewitnesses to the announcement. It was one of those strange moments where everyone stopped laughing for a second and realized that beyond the family drama, there were going to be real legal, financial, and emotional consequences once the celebrations were over.

ETA 1

Thank you all again for the lovely comments about my dad.

Tea update...

Auntie E DID NOT KNOW.

She and Uncle J are currently screaming at each other in the parking lot.

The bride is smiling through gritted teeth and refusing to acknowledge any of it.

Dad's exact words:

"I think she might snap."

No kidding.

I've given Dad a list of investigative questions:

  • Why today?

  • Did Uncle J actually plan this, or was he just drunk?

  • Are they seriously staying for the reception?

I've also told Dad that I'm sharing updates with "a very small group of friends online."

A tiny white lie.

After assuring him nobody would ever know he was the family gossip, he became absolutely delighted to continue reporting.

ETA 2

I've been climbing the walls waiting for another update.

Unfortunately, my dad belongs to the generation that believes looking at your phone during company is deeply rude—even if your daughter is desperately waiting for gossip.

So we only receive updates during bathroom breaks.

Here's what has happened so far.

Auntie E and Uncle J continued screaming at each other in the parking lot until the groom and his groomsmen stepped in.

Dad couldn't hear every word, but apparently Uncle J insists this wasn't an accident or drunken slip.

He intentionally announced the divorce because he wanted his daughter to have a happier marriage than he did.

Somehow...

He thought this was the appropriate moment.

Uncle J is extremely drunk.

According to Dad, he has essentially remained drunk since about 1992.

Auntie E isn't much better.

She's sitting at her table crying loudly while Uncle J has taken over the bar and is giving anyone who will listen a speech titled:

"Women: You Can't Trust Them."

They're glaring at each other from opposite sides of a very small reception room.

The bride—who admittedly isn't my favorite person—is somehow pretending none of this is happening.

Everything is apparently...

"FINE."

Dad tried speaking with her, but she's determined to ignore reality.

Honestly...

It's her wedding day.

What else can she do?

At this point, I genuinely can't decide whether Uncle J and Auntie E are about to kill each other...

...or make out on top of the cake table.

Both possibilities are equally horrifying.

Because my family apparently cannot enjoy anything without disaster...

Dad went over to speak with Uncle J to gather more information.

Instead...

Uncle J said something so unbelievably cruel that Dad quietly left the wedding without saying goodbye to anyone.

Dad wouldn't tell me exactly what was said.

Fortunately...

I'm his daughter.

I have sources.

Apparently Uncle J told Dad how lucky he was that his wife had died because now he could enjoy life without paying expensive divorce lawyers.

So that's it.

Uncle J is dead to us.

He's also dramatically reduced his Christmas shopping list.

Enjoy your lonely life, you horrible man.

I'm sorry this story ends on such a sad note, but honestly...

This is exactly what my family does.

Every single time.

Things go way too far.

And someone always gets hurt.

Dad is back at his hotel now.

I just wish I could be there with him.

ETA 4

Dad is absolutely fine this morning.

Thank you to everyone who asked about him.

He went back to his hotel, had a quiet drink, something to eat, and we finally had a proper conversation.

However...

Dad would like everyone to know that my version of events is completely inaccurate.

According to him, what actually happened was this:

He delivered a flawless karate-style spinning kick directly to Uncle J's jaw...

Then calmly walked away after delivering the coolest one-liner in history.

He was also suddenly wearing a perfectly tailored tuxedo.

Imagine James Bond...

...if James Bond were in his mid-70s, had a bad knee, an enlarged prostate, and an unstoppable love of family gossip.

And that's the official version of the story.

We're sticking with it.
