I created this account because I honestly don't know who else I can talk to about this.
My best friend and I are both 19-year-old guys, and we've been
inseparable for almost ten years. We grew up together, survived school together, and have always been each other's closest friend. We've shared practically everything over the years, and I never imagined our friendship would become so confusing.
For years, we'd joke about how neither of us had much luck dating.
We'd laugh about eventually finding girlfriends in university and tease each other about who would get into a relationship first.
A few months ago, I finally met an amazing girl.
We started dating, and things have been going really well. My family and most of my friends absolutely adore her.
The only person who seemed... different... was my best friend.
He wasn't rude or openly unhappy, but I couldn't shake the feeling that he wasn't nearly as excited for me as everyone else was. At first I assumed I was imagining it, but looking back now, I wonder if I missed something.
Our friendship has always been unusually affectionate.
We're both straight—or at least that's always been my understanding—and we've always joked around in ways that probably look strange to other people. We'd hug, occasionally cuddle while watching movies, and constantly make sarcastic jokes about "kissing the homies goodnight." It was simply part of our sense of humor, and nobody in our friend group ever treated it as anything serious.
At least, that's what I believed.
Last week we all attended a costume party together.
My girlfriend came with some of her own friends, while the rest of us spent most of the evening hanging out, playing games, and having a few drinks.
Eventually someone suggested a game of Truth or Dare.
During the game, one of my girlfriend's friends challenged me to kiss my best friend.
Everyone around us started laughing, including my girlfriend, who jokingly encouraged me to go through with it.
Without really thinking, I did.
He kissed me back.
The entire thing lasted only a moment, and at the time I assumed we both saw it as nothing more than a silly party dare.
Everyone laughed, we continued the evening, and I thought that was the end of it.
The next morning, everything changed.
Friends kept bringing up the kiss, but my best friend never showed up for class. He ignored my messages and didn't answer any of my calls.
The more I sat with everything that happened, the more I started replaying our entire friendship in my head.
Little moments I had never questioned before suddenly seemed different.
The way he sometimes looked disappointed when I talked about my relationship.
How often he wanted to spend time together.
How naturally comfortable we always were being physically affectionate compared to most of our other friends.
Now I'm wondering if I've completely misunderstood our friendship.
Maybe the kiss meant absolutely nothing.
Maybe it made him uncomfortable.
Or maybe it brought feelings to the surface that neither of us had ever acknowledged before.
I honestly don't know.
The uncertainty is what bothers me the most.
I care about my girlfriend, and I care deeply about my best friend.
The last thing I want is to hurt either of them.
Right now, I just wish I understood what my friend is thinking because his silence has left me questioning everything I thought I knew about our friendship.
Am I overthinking this situation, or would you also wonder whether that kiss meant something more after everything that's happened since?
Final Thoughts
Close friendships can sometimes become emotionally complicated, especially during periods of major life changes such as starting new relationships. Honest, respectful communication is often the healthiest way to clear up misunderstandings and avoid making assumptions about another person's feelings. If emotions become overwhelming or difficult to navigate, speaking with a licensed counselor or therapist can also help individuals better understand their relationships, communicate openly, and make thoughtful decisions without unnecessary pressure.
